Litvak Legacies
Litvaks (Yiddish Lítvakǝs) are the classic Lithuanian Jews, emanating from the lands of the erstwhile Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and congruent with today’s republics of Belarus, Latvia and Lithuania, in addition to sections of northeastern Poland, northern and Eastern Ukraine, westernmost Russia and Estonia. Their surviving progeny can be found today in Australia, Britain, Canada, Israel, South Africa, the United States, among other countries, in addition to the remnant survivor communities in Lithuania, Belarus and other homeland republics that are the successor states to the Grand Duchy’s Litvak regions.
